A poet on the boundary between reality and the inner world, whose life shaped one of the most original literary experiences in South Slavic literature.
Risto Ratković was born in 1903 in Bijelo Polje, in a family that lost its material security during the wars. His upbringing was marked by a sense of instability and early introspection, which would later become the foundation of his literary poetics.
EARLY LIFE
Already in his youth, Risto Ratković showed pronounced sensitivity and a tendency toward inner self-examination. His early religiosity, accompanied by internal conflicts and symbolic actions, indicates a deep need to understand the world beyond visible reality.
Fascination with death, dreams, and the unknown became a lasting feature of his inner world, which would later define his literary creation.
BELGRADE AND LITERARY BEGINNINGS
With his arrival in Belgrade in 1923, Risto Ratković entered the intellectual and literary space of the then Yugoslavia. Although formally enrolled in studies, his true focus became literature and the exploration of the limits of expression.
During this period, he began to shape his authentic style, moving away from conventional forms and turning toward inner experience.

The relationship with Katarina Ljubinković represents one of the most important moments in Risto Ratković’s life. Her death left a deep mark, after which his withdrawal into the inner world became even more pronounced.

As a diplomat, Risto Ratković stayed in France, Egypt, and the Soviet Union. Although physically present in different cultures, his inner sense of alienation remained constant.

Marginalization and the end
The last years of Risto Ratković’s life were marked by illness, poverty, and social marginalization. He died in 1954 in Belgrade, almost forgotten by the wider public.
